Pashko Vasa
-Governor of Lebanon-

In the 19th century, the Ottoman dominion of Mount Lebanon, i.e. the later country of Lebanon, which had a large Christian population, was divided and governed by Christian Maronites and Druzes, the latter being members of an esoteric religion derived from Shia Islam. In 1861, the Ottomans agreed to a reunification of the country under a non-Lebanese Christian governor. How could this take place if Muslim-Christian relations were uniformly oppressive? One of the most famous governors of Lebanon was an Albanian Catholic, Pashko Vasa Shkodrani.

Stefi Gjine
-growing tennis player-

Gjine draws on athletic genes

REGINA (CP) - Growing up in an athletic family, it was natural for Stefi Gjine to be successful in sports, especially tennis.

The tennis phenom from North Vancouver, B.C., grew up with the strong support of her parents, who were elite athletes in Albania. Now at only 15-years-old, she has 124 trophies in her collection.

"I'm telling you I love tennis," Gjine said. "I used to play the under-14, under-16 and under-18 (in B.C.) and I won all three of them. From that tournament on, they wouldn't let me play all three."

Since she was 11, Gjine has been winning the province's top two events. She stepped onto the national stage at her first Canada Summer Games this week.

(...)

Gjine's dad says he's really glad both Stefi and her 11-year-old sister Jenny inherited the athletic gene.

Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras I

-Orthodox Priest-

Patriarch Athenagoras I was born in the province of Ioanina, Epirus on March 25, 1886, at that time still apart of the Ottoman Empire. The son of the village doctor, his mother died when he was only 13. In 1903, he entered the Halki Theological Academy near Istanbul. In 1910, he graduated with his degree in theology, was tonsured as a monk and ordained as a deacon. In December of 1922, while still a deacon, he was elected as the Metropolitan of the island of Corfu. In 1930, he was elected the Greek Orthodox Archbishop of North and South America and served as our Archbishop until 1948. During his 18-year tenure, the women’s Philoptochos, the philanthropic arm of the Church was established. He also established an orphanage, St. Basil’s Academy, and a seminary, Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. Elected Patriarch of Constantinople in 1948, Athenagoras was active in the ecumenical movement, seeking to establish better relationships among Christians. Perhaps most notable was his meeting with Pope Paul VI in Jerusalem in 1964, which resulted in the mutual lifting of the anathemas that had separated Orthodox and Roman Catholic Christians since 1054 AD. This symbolic gesture opened the possibility of authentic dialogue between the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches for the first time in centuries. Patriarch Athengoras died on July 7th, 1972.

The excerpts below are taken from a book, Conversations with Patriarch Athenagoras written by the French Orthodox theologian and writer, Olivier Clement in 1969.

Tom Perrotta
-Writer-

Good to Know

Some fun factoids from our interview with Perrotta:

"My mother is Albanian."

"I don't eat eggs."

"My dog lived to the ripe old age of 18."

source - biography

Tom Perrotta did not take well to being a parent. "I had gone to great lengths to invent myself as somebody who had a certain level of coolness," he told Terry Gross, in a 2004 interview for NPR's Fresh Air, "and parenthood is about the least cool role you can take on. For anybody who has any sort of bohemian leanings or aspirations or self-delusions, parenthood is a jolt to the very fiber of your being."

Donald Leka
-Founder, Chairman and CEO
TransMedia, Inc.-

“Donald Leka launched Transmedia during one of the toughest economic climates in recent history. Donald appeared on CNN to introduce his company to the business community on September 7, 2001. A few days later, the tragic events of September 11 changed the world, drastically altering technology investment and spending in Transmedia’s target markets.

Many technology companies went out of business, or stopped developing new technology. Donald had another plan, redoubling Transmedia’s development and sales efforts and securing angel investment and strategic partner investment, with fair valuations and terms for the company.

Enrico Cuccia

-MASTER OF ITALIAN FINANCE-

Cuccia was the man of "determining importance" for Italy's fragile post-war economy.
Political, bank, finance and business leaders all agree that Cuccia's death marks the end of an era.

Prime Minister Giuliano Amato said that Mr. Cuccia's death preceded by only a few days the formal closing of IRI, the state holding company set up in the 1930's to nationalize private companies after World War II. The Prime Minister remarked that the coincidence of these two events mark the end of an era and the turning point of a capitalism which is more open and competitive.

Newspapers talk of Cuccia as the silent string-puller of Italian capitalism.

Transport Minister, Pierluigi Bersani, praised Mr. Cuccia for his contribution to "the solutions that helped Italian finance and industry emerge".

Bank of Italy Governor, Antonio Fazio stated that Cuccia " was a man who always worked for his country"

Confindustria President, D'Amato remembered that Cuccia 'has always fought to defend private enterprise and the market". "Italy will miss this man of great intelligence and experience" he goes on to say.

Industrialist Giovanni Agnelli remarked that with his death "Italy loses the most important character of this century".

Alfonso Desiata, president of the Generali, Italy's largest Insurance Company, recalled the "high example of professional ethics" given by Cuccia throughout his life.

Rainer Masera, administrator of the San Paolo-IMI bank, underlined Cuccia's " great respect for the value of the bank as an enterprise" while Davide Croff, administrator of the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro, highlighted Cuccia's "exceptional qualities, a man who has given a great deal to Italian finance and economy".

Cuccia was still in control of Mediobanca and the news of his death boosted all the "Mediobanca galaxy" shares.

The race towards succession has already started though Cesare Geronzi, President of the Banca di Roma, the biggest Mediobanca share holder, stated that there are no vacancies (Cuccia was honorary president) and that there will be no revolutions, but only international alliances that will have to be accelerated". Mediobanca, he said, "will continue to be a merchant bank and any change will need time, meditation, and agreement of shareholders". He also stated that he does not understand the reason for the boost on the Stock Exchange.

Girolamo De Rada

-Arbėresh Writer-

Girolamo De Rada (1814-1903), known in Albanian as Jeronim De Rada, is not only the best known writer of Italo-Albanian literature but also the foremost figure of the Albanian nationalist movement in nineteenth-century Italy.

Born the son of a parish priest of Greek rite in Macchia Albanese (Alb. Maqi) in the mountains of Cosenza, De Rada attended the college of Saint Adrian in San Demetrio Corone. Already imbued with a passion for his Albanian lineage, he began collecting folklore material at an early age. In October of 1834, in accordance with his father’s wishes, he registered at the Faculty of Law of the University of Naples, but the main focus of his interests remained folklore and literature. It was in Naples in 1836 that De Rada published the first edition of his best known Albanian-language poem, the ‘Songs of Milosao,’ under the Italian title Poesie albanesi del secolo XV. Canti di Milosao, figlio del despota di Scutari (Albanian poetry from the 15th century. Songs of Milosao, son of the despot of Shkodra). He was soon forced to abandon his studies due to a cholera epidemic in Naples and returned home to Calabria. His second work, Canti storici albanesi di Serafina Thopia, moglie del principe Nicola Ducagino, Naples 1839 (Albanian historical songs of Serafina Thopia, wife of prince Nicholas Dukagjini), was seized by the Bourbon authorities because of De Rada’s alleged affiliation with conspiratorial groups during the Italian Risorgimento. The work was republished under the title Canti di Serafina Thopia, principessa di Zadrina nel secolo XV, Naples 1843 (Songs of Serafina Thopia, princess of Zadrina in the 15th century) and in later years in a third version as Specchio di umano transito, vita di Serafina Thopia, Principessa di Ducagino, Naples 1897 (Mirror of human transience, life of Serafina Thopia, princess of Dukagjin). His Italian-language historical tragedy I Numidi, Naples 1846 (The Numidians), elaborated half a century later as Sofonisba, dramma storico, Naples 1892 (Sofonisba, historical drama), enjoyed only modest public response. In the revolutionary year 1848, De Rada founded the newspaper L’Albanese d’Italia (The Albanian of Italy) which included articles in Albanian. This bilingual ‘political, moral and literary journal’ with a final circulation of 3,200 copies was the first Albanian-language periodical anywhere.

Bill Kovach

-Director of the Harvard Fellowship; Award Winning Journalist-

Bill Kovach, who has been called "a newsroom hero" for his unwavering principles as an editor and "the conscience of American journalism" for his uncompromising advocacy of high professional standards, will receive the 48th Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award for journalism at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, on Thursday, November 9.

The award, established in 1952, is presented annually to honor important contributions to the nation’s journalistic achievement and to remember Lovejoy, an 1826 Colby graduate who was America’s first martyr to freedom of the press.

As the 2000 Lovejoy Fellow, Kovach will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree at 8 p.m. in Colby’s Lorimer Chapel before he delivers an address. The Lovejoy convocation is open to the public.

Kovach, the son of Albanian immigrants who settled in Tennessee (his father never learned to read or write), rose to editorial positions at The New York Times, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and The Washington Post. For 11 years, until last June, he led The Nieman Foundation at Harvard University, which strives to elevate journalism standards through publications, seminars, conferences and fellowships. In 1999 Kovach published Warp Speed: America in the Age of Mixed Media with co-author Tom Rosenstiel, a study of news coverage of the Clinton-Lewinsky controversy.

Shefki Kuqi (born November 10, 1976 in Kosovo) is a Finnish footballer who currently plays for Blackburn Rovers F.C. in the English Premiership. He is a big and strong striker - nicknamed The Kosovar Ox - who is known more for his determination than technical skill. Shefki is the elder brother of Njazi Kuqi, who plays for Birmingham City.

Kuqi started his playing career with MP Mikkeli, shortly after emigrating to Finland. He also played for HJK Helsinki and FC Jokerit – with whom he was the Veikkausliiga top scorer in 2000 – in Finland, before joining Stockport County in January 2001. Kuqi then had a spell at Sheffield Wednesday before joining Ipswich Town. Kuqi's 20 goals in the Championship for Ipswich in the 2004-05 season earned him a move to the Premiership with Blackburn. In the current season alone, Kuqi has notched up 7 goals and 7 assists thus far.

Kuqi has received some media attention - especially from Match of the Day - for his spectacular, and unusual, goal celebration: the swan dive (or flying Finn). Where Kuqi jumps forward with both arms out, in what could be described as an attempt to glide like a bird, before crashing to the ground. Although, it looks like a celebration which may cause injury Kuqi has been reported to have said it does not hurt him.

Kuqi made his debut for the Finnish national team on August 18, 1999 against Belgium. He is a regular squad member of the team.

Nick Tosches

Later on, I purchased his novel Trinities, which takes place in the fascinating but unsavory world of the Mafia – with which Tosches is very familiar, both from having grown up in Newark, New Jersey, in an Italian/Albanian family, and for having written a now hard-to-find and comprehensive biography of the Sicilian mobster Michele Sindona. I did not read this very good novel until after I had finished reading The Nick Tosches Reader, which is a mighty fine sampler of Tosches’ writing (fiction, non-fiction, book and record reviews, and articles published in numerous magazines, from Vanity Fair, to Rolling Stone and The Village Voice, to name only three) -- if you want to get a good grasp of what Nick Tosches is all abo...

World's largest nail mosaic hammered out

By Benet Koleka

TIRANA (Reuters) - Albanian artist Saimir Strati has hammered tens of thousands of nails into a wooden board over the past 24 days to create a portrait of Leonardo da Vinci and the world's biggest nail mosaic.

"I can officially confirm that we have a new record for the largest nail mosaic of eight square metres," Guinness World Records adjudicator Scott Christie said late on Monday.

The mosaic stood in the main hall of Tirana's pyramid-shaped culture centre, exactly where a larger-than-life sculpture of the late Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha used to stand.

Large-headed nails shone in the light falling on the sides of Da Vinci's flowing grey beard. Smaller black tapestry nails created shadow below his eyes and chin. Three rows of yellow nails framed the portrait.

"I have lost count of the nails, but I think it was around 400 kilos (880 pounds) of nails. I have used different nails. The condition was they should be industrial nails and they are," Strati said.

"My technique resembles (digital) camera pixels. I have used a nail for each pixel," he told Reuters.

A video record of the feat showed him nailing away for up to 12 hours a day.

"This is something quite unique and quite spectacular," Christie told Reuters, adding the mosaic is "a completely new category" for Guinness.

"We did not know quite what to expect before we came, but we are amazed and truly astounded at the fantastic work he has done, days and nights and hour upon hour," he added.

"Someone will have to try to beat that, but I do not think it will be beaten for some time."

Alex Buzo
-Famous Australian playright-

Alex Buzo (23 July 1944 - 16 August 2006) was an Australian playwright and author who wrote 88 works. [1]

Buzo was born in Sydney in 1944 to an Albanian-born father and an Australian mother. He attended The Armidale School in Armidale and The International School in Geneva before graduating from the University of New South Wales.

About his Dad, Zinhi

I mentioned in my writer's post that Zihni, Alex's dad, had come to Armidale for the building of the Oakey Hydro Scheme. As an aside, I spelt Zinhi's name wrongly, failing to add the h. But then, I have always said the name, rarely spelt it!

Zihni Buzo OAM was an Albanian. He used to tell me now he had been in the Boy Scouts with Enver Hoxha who later become communist dictator. Apparently Hoxha was a nasty piece of work even then.

Tefta Tashko Koēo
-Egyptian Soprano-

Soprano Tefta Tashko Koēo (1910-1947) was born in Fayoum, Egypt, where her parents had emigrated from the end of the 19th century. In 1921 the family moved to Korēė, and in 1927 Tefta left for Montpellier to learn singing. Between 1932 and 1936 she studied at the Conservatoire National de Musique et de Déclamation in Paris. When she returned to Albania permanently in 1936, apart from her programmes of operatic and chamber music, she also dedicated a great deal of effort to concentrating on learning and performing the Albanian urban lyric songs. She recorded twice for Columbia in Italy, in 1937 and 1942, a selection of the classical vocal repertoire and 45 Albanian urban lyric songs. Tefta was esteemed by national and foreign critics as “a lyric soprano of an excellent training, with a clear and healthy tone, with a cristaline intonation, brilliant vocal technique, discreet gestures and delightful phrasing” (Gllas, Beograd, 14 November 1945). Nearly five years before her death, Tefta and her husband, Kristo, had a son named Eno.
